Dewalt DS150 Tough System Box – Little But Full of Features

IMG_0793

Continuing on in our series about the Dewalt Tough System range of tool boxes in this article we will cover off the baby of the range the Dewalt DS150 Tough Box. In our previous article we gave an overview of the range but it is now time to show you some of the cool features these boxes have that may pass you by with just a cursory glance. The DS150 is probably the most popular box in the range for a couple of reasons. First off it is the smallest and most portable of the lot. Think of it as a Tradies briefcase! The second is that many of the Dewalt Cordless power tool kits are supplied in the Dewalt DS150 Tough Box as standard. This is a great idea as it gets you into the system when you buy your new tools and lets you add to it as needed for anything else you need to carry.

How tough are these Dewalt Tough System boxes?

To be short real tough – They are made from a super tough plastic. It is the same plastic that is used to make large pallet crates. We’ve been using these crates in our warehouses for years and even forklifts, trucks and transport knocks are shrugged off so no worries if they are sliding round in the back of the ute! This box has a carrying capacity of 30kg so if you wanted you could fill it with concrete and lug it around without fear.

IMG_0792Speaking of lugging it around….handles there’s heaps of them! One on the top briefcase style and one on each end. All of these are spring loaded to return to a flush position and avoid contact damage. Then there is one more on the lid. This handle is primarily used if multiple boxes are joined together to form a chest. What is cool about this handle is it locks in place and has a slight angle on it that makes it easy to carry and stops the box smash you in the leg. It’s the little things.

Toughness is also present in the amount of sealing present on the boxes. They are all rated IP65. What’s IP65? Well it means they are totally dust tight and water jet proof. No issues with saw dust or leaving them in the back of the ute in a torrential down pour.

All of these boxes have solid latches, padlock points and large hinges. The only improvement I could see made would be to use stainless steel rather than galvanised steel for the fittings.

What are does the inside of the DS150 Tough System box look like?

IMG_0784The boffins at Dewalt really put some thought into this tool box. I am a huge fan of the way the have designed the internals of this box.

IMG_0787When you open the box you see an array of various sized plastic containers. These can be removed and adjusted to just about any configuration. What is really cool though is the fact that you can remove some of them to leave space for a drill or impact driver and thanks to the notches on the underside of the lid they won’t shift about when the lid is shut and its thrown into the back of the van. Again thanks Dewalt – Up there for thinking.

The lid also contains extra storage. Pull the yellow tab at the top and a draw swings down to reveal a tray with two lockable storage areas. THis is a great place for a few bits, screwdrivers, fasteners etc. When you have this top tray open it also acts as a locking mechanism for the main lid stopping it shut by knocking or form the wind. This is another of those little features that may go unnoticed at first glance but really pays dividends when on site.

That’s great but whats the damage?
