New Stuff & New Ways To Buy

I won’t say I have been too lazy to post of late, it’s been more like really busy. Those that know me will be saying “When aren’t you busy?” and that’s true I am not one to sit still. However sometimes one does take on a little too much and some areas such as this blog suffer a little. That would be bad if it wasn’t for the busyness  going on behind the scenes….

Camera Bags – The Short List Dissected

Recapping my last post – I’m looking for a camera pack for my Japan trip in February 2014. I don’t think my requirements are excessive or out of the ordinary but I did struggle to find what I needed at a price I was willing to pay.

The pack has to serve two main tasks; the first is as a camera gear/laptop carrying carry on bag for transit with room for a few travel essentials the other is as a pack suitable for snowboarding with room for camera and back country gear plus hydration bladder compatibility. Continue reading

Camera Bags, Snow Boarding & Carry On Luggage – Can You Have It All?

So here’s the deal…If you didn’t read my previous post, I’m off to Japan in February to hit up epic pow with mates and I had intentions of taking my camera gear to get some pics and build the portfolio a little. Sounds good on paper but the more I looked at it the more complicated it got. The issue as everyone knows is luggage allowance. One piece of carry on and one piece of checked in baggage can be very prohibitive. A rolling snowboard bag should take care of the boards and hopefully all of my gear and a change of clothes but trusting camera gear to baggage handlers is fraught with risk so carry on is the logical choice.

Carry on luggage has its own issues primarily the 7kg and 115cm size limits. This has foced me to consider the kit and bag I use to carry it.

Why Wait For That Random Impact Test – Check Your Hard Hat Now!

hc600v_2_6It’s a fact that may not be know by all but hard hats have a shelf life and when expired they should be disposed of (destroyed) and replaced.
The biggest enemy to a hard hat is Ultra Violet (UV) light. It slowly degrades the shell making it brittle which over time will minimise the shells ability to absorb and protect from impact. The best way to spot this is when the hard hat begins to lose its’ glossy finish and become chalky to touch.

If you’ve got a hard hat this brittle do yourself and your family a favour and replace it now before that onsite random impact test occurs!

Field tests have shown that the shell of a hard hat has a service life of 3 years from the date of issue while the components attached to the shell such as the harness deteriorate more rapidly and should be replaced after 2 years. This can be a little tricky and to be honest the cheapest option is just to replace the helmet every 2 years.

There are some care and maintenance guides you can follow to ensure you maximise your hard hats life. These include:

  • Store your hard hat in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight, heavy or sharp objects and chemicals
  • Paint, thinners, solvent based adhesives and some cleaning chemicals can reduce electrical resistance so avoid contact where possible
  • UV radiation and extreme heat are your big enemies and can reduce the strength  of the hard hat. Do not store in direct sunlight.
  • Clean your hard hat in warm soapy water
  • Paint and stickers can hide deterioration so limit their use on your lid.
  • Don’t modify the shell or harness

So if it’s time to replace that hard hat check out some of the options availble from us at Direct2Trade.co.nz

Need Chainsaw? – Carnage This Morning

hc660vcombo_1_1_5I’m not sure about the rest of the country but while driving to work this morning it was clear that Christchurch got hammered last night by the wind. Trees down everywhere you looked and not just the small ones! Record winds were recorded at Mt Hutt summit yesterday at 251.9 kilometres per hour!cs33eb

If you’ve got some clean up to do a new chainsaw may be the ticket and lets be honest who isn’t looking for an excuse to get a chainsaw or update their old tired one.

Ball Is To Dog As Tool Is To Man

Lilly The Direct2Trade Dog

Lilly The Direct2Trade Dog

I was out throwing the ball with awesome Direct2Trade dog Lilly yesterday when it occurred to me the similarities between men and dogs.

You see she has this insatiable desire to procure a particular object, in her case the object is a tennis ball. I find this difficult to comprehend as this small, yellow, round, fury, drool covered object holds no fancy for me. She loves it though, loves to chase it, bring it back and chase it again etc. etc. Continue reading

Cordless Grinder Comparison – Hitachi G18DSL & DeWalt DCG412

Here at Direct2Trade we get to have a look at a lot of products and an area that always interests me is cordless tools that cut. This could be circular saws, jigswas, reciprocating (sabre) saws etc or in this case cordless grinders.

Side by side

There is something to be said for being able to wield one of these tools without the fear of cutting a 240v cable or tripping over it while concentrating on your work.  With the battery capacities growing these cordless tools are now viable options for tradies or those of you that require these tools to earn a crust.

Direct2Trade stock both the Hitachi G18DSL and DeWalt DCG412. Both of these are 125mm or 5″ grinders and are available as bare tools (minus batteries and charger) or in the case of the Hitachi G18DSL as a kit with two of the latest 4.0Ah powerhouses. Pricewise there isn’t too much in it for the bare tools so it really comes down to a couple of points: Continue reading
